Great news today about the two gibbons we wrote about earlier this month! The primates were discovered at a private health establishment in Binh Phuoc province in early August, where the owner was keeping them illegally but was unaware he had been breaking the law.      

Last Saturday, ENV’s Wildlife Protection Volunteer Network dropped in to visit the iZi English club in Ho Chi Minh City for an informative and interactive discussion on the illegal trade and consumption of wildlife in Vietnam.  

Today we bring you some good gibbon news. On Friday, the Da Nang Forest Protection Department and the Environment Police confiscated a gibbon from a resident’s house in Cam Le district, Da Nang City. The gibbon was identified as a northern white-cheeked gibbon (Nomascus leucogenys) – the same species as one of the other gibbons

Yesterday an officer from Vietnamese conservation group PanNature notified ENV of two gibbons being kept illegally at a private health establishment in Binh Phuoc province. The owner had previously received the gibbons as a gesture of goodwill and wasn’t aware he was breaking the law.  

In May 2013, ENV Wildlife Crime Unit conducted an inspection visit on a bear farm hotspot in Quynh Luu, Nghe An. Many bear bile signboards were found illegally displayed. We immediately informed to Quynh Luu People’s Committee and cooperated with the local Forest Protection Department (FPD) to enforce the bear farms to remove their advertisment. 

Today, on International Tiger Day, people across the globe recognize the threats faced by the world’s remaining tigers. Here at ENV, we support tiger conservation in Vietnam every day by working with law enforcement, decision-makers and the public to stop the illegal trade and reduce the consumption of tigers in Vietnam.     

Since the St Petersburg Tiger Summit in 2010, people have been coming together at the end of July each year to recognize the threats faced by tigers across the globe.   Here at ENV, every day is tiger day. As part of our ongoing campaign to engage with bear farmers in Vietnam, ENV has sent out a new flyer aimed at persuading farmers to cease all bear farming practices.  

Yesterday, ENV’s HCMC team headed for Le Van Tam Park. After a night of heavy downpours, we arrived at 5.30am as it was still raining and were pleased to find the park busy with many bright-eyed and excited locals keen to engage with our wildlife trade exhibit.    

Two wildlife crime cases this week have highlighted the importance of the volunteer seminar we ran last weekend entitled “Leopard cats – not your pets”.
