A public informant contacted ENV after spotting the pig-tailed macaque inside a restaurant window in Hanoi 🐒 The local authorities planned to check it out, however, the pandemic caused some delays. In the meantime, the restaurant reported the macaque to the People’s Committee themselves to arrange a voluntary transfer.
The Hanoi Forest Protection Department then facilitated the transport of the macaque, relocating it to Hanoi Wildlife Rescue Centre. This case shows how it’s never too late to do the right thing! 💚

Green peacock confiscated from pagoda 🦚
An informant contacted ENV’s hotline regarding a green peafowl being kept in a pagoda in An Giang province, southern Vietnam. Apparently, the bird had been given as a gift by a member of the public.
There were delays relocating the bird out of the pagoda due to the prevalence of Covid-19, but we received the news yesterday that it had been successfully transferred to Hon Me Wildlife Rescue Station! 🌳
The green peafowl is native to Southeast Asia, and has been listed as endangered by the IUCN due to its population declining rapidly from habitat loss ⚠️

18 months in prison for otter trafficker! 🦦
This had been an ongoing case, spanning back to a report from an informant last year. The subject had been posting videos of the otters on TikTok and advertising them for sale on Facebook, leading to his arrest by the Tan Phu District Police back in December 2020 🚓The 2 baby otters were confiscated and relocated to a wildlife facility 🌳
There were unavoidable prosecution delays due to the spread of Covid-19 this year ☣️ However, the subject was finally sentenced this November by Tan Phu District Court in HCMC, receiving 18 months in prison for his crimes against wildlife!

Thanks to decisive actions of the Lai Chau Provincial Police making the arrests back in July, and the effective prosecution from Nam Nhun District Court this week, 2 subjects were sentenced to 12 months in prison each for possessing the sun bear ⚖️
The tiny bear cub was found in a residential property, weighing only 5 kg. This species of bear can weigh up to 70kg as a male, and gets its name from the orange-toned patch on its chest ☀️ This cub was safely transferred to the Hoang Lien National Park Rescue Center.

More turtles confiscated from pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City! 🐢

In an ongoing effort to keep endangered turtle species out of pagodas, on November 10th the HCMC Forest Protection Department seized 2 Giant Asian pond turtles, a Southeast Asian box turtle, 4 Chinese stripe-necked turtles and 4 red-eared sliders. They have now been relocated to Cu Chi Wildlife Rescue Station 🌳
This issue has persisted since May, when 52 turtles were confiscated from the same pagoda ❌ The continued introduction of turtles into this space occurs because the public will visit the pagoda to ‘release’ the turtles with good intentions. However, they are actually perpetuating the illegal wildlife trade by taking these animals from their natural habitats.
ENV is working with pagodas all over Vietnam to address this issue, and has recently released a campaign film, ‘Pagodas in Vietnam are No Place for Wildlife!’ as part of a larger campaign to prevent this practice, which can be found on YouTube.

2 subjects arrested for trading bear parts ⚠️

The subjects were caught in the act of illegally trading 16 parts of a bear in Me Linh, a rural district of Hanoi ❌ They were discovered by the Me Linh District Police in a local café, having 2 large sacks filled with illegal wildlife products.
The items were confiscated and the subjects immediately arrested. The criminals are now facing prosecution thanks to the decisive actions of law enforcement! 🙌

We have an uplifting story to share with you, where an eagle was released back into the wild on The Big Mountain in Vung Tau, southern Vietnam. An informant contacted ENV via the Wildlife Crime Hotline to report an eagle roaming the streets of the city. It was suspected to have escaped from a local establishment ⚠️
ENV put the informant in touch with one of our trusted wildlife protection volunteers, who assisted in the safe transport and release of the eagle at the top of the mountain 💚 Our volunteer has been helping ENV for over 10 years and we want to thank him and the informant for their commitment to safeguarding wildlife.

A cook was fined VND 270 million for a monitor lizard! 🦎
The Huong Thuy Forest Protection Department discovered the endangered clouded monitor at a restaurant in Hue and quickly confiscated it. According to the subject, he had bought the monitor from the illegal wildlife trade.
The People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province handled the case and handed out the hefty fine of 270 million VND ❌ Meanwhile, the lizard with its injured front limb is being cared for before its release back into the wild!

The subjects were selling bear, tiger and ivory products, as well as some live animals on Facebook and Zalo ❌🐘 They made repeated violations and luckily, were reported by multiple informants.
The decision to fine 86 million and 71 million per subject was made by the Kon Tum People’s Committee, and they have made provincial history, in that this is the first time a wildlife crime case has received this high of an administrative punishment in Kon Tum! ⚖️
This is great news in the fight against the illegal wildlife trade in Vietnam, showing non-tolerance to be the most effective option. We hope that this stricter punishment will deter future wildlife crimes and result in fewer wildlife criminals.

Back in August, 2021, two subjects were arrested after transporting a dead bear cub on the back of their motorbike ❌ Apparently, the bear had been caught in the wild by another seller. This is a great violation upon wildlife, taking this already endangered species away from its natural habitat.
We want to thank the Lai Chau Provincial Police for seizing the bear and arresting the individuals on the scene, and the Lai Chau Provincial Court for taking their crimes seriously and sentencing them to 2 years in prison each!

6 years 6 months in prison for seller of 64 illegal tortoises! 🔒
The illegal tortoise seller was caught after an informant reported one of his Facebook advertisements to ENV. We reached out to Thu Duc District Police, who followed up on the case, arresting the individual for his crimes, and seizing 64 tortoises! 🐢 The species of tortoise included radiated tortoises, Indian star tortoises, sulcata tortoises, 4 Burmese star tortoises and 3 leopard tortoises.
Despite the scale of his illegal business, the subject was originally facing only 1 to 5 years in prison. However, after all things were considered by Thu Duc District Court, he was sentenced to 6 years and 6 months in prison!
This shows how perseverance and non-tolerance to wildlife crime pays off in the end. We appreciate the local authorities for their efforts in ensuring that wildlife traffickers and traders receive stricter sentences! ❌ The exotic pet trade is increasing in Vietnam and we hope this adequate punishment will deter future crimes.

We received a Hotline call about a macaque needing a voluntary transfer and reported this to the Dong Nai Forest Protection Department, who shared this information with Long Khanh Forest Protection Department 🌳
There were complications due to the prevalence of Covid-19 in Dong Nai, and with Vietnam taking serious precautions against the pandemic, the case was trickier to follow. Nonetheless, the authorities acted quickly and successfully received the macaque, releasing it back into the wild! 🍃
According to the informant, they had to convince their family member to give up the wild animal 💡 We want to thank the informant for understanding the importance of wildlife protection and sharing this knowledge with the people closest to them!

ENV’s latest sting operation has aided in the confiscation of an illegal 30 kg Asiatic black bear cub in Uong Bi city in northern Vietnam 🐻During our most recent internet campaign the team was specifically looking for tiger crime, however, the case officer ended up finding a live bear cub being advertised on Facebook!
ENV immediately alerted the Economic Police of Quang Ninh province, who brought in the help of Uong Bi District Police. Our collaborative efforts led to 3 subjects being arrested in connection to illegal trafficking of the bear, and they are now facing up to 5 years in prison according to Vietnamese wildlife protection law ⚠️
It is suspected that this bear cub may have been poached illegally from the wild. Fortunately, the cub has now been transferred to Tam Dao Bear Sanctuary, where it can begin its new life safe from the illegal wildlife trade 💚

ENV initially received a report about a man advertising the sale of ivory products back in 2019, who our Wildlife Crime Unit have been keeping close tabs on since. This work has paid off, resulting in the seizure of many illegal items thanks to collaboration with the Dak Lak Environment Police. They confiscated 2.56 kg of African elephant ivory as well as two black bear gallbladders from the subject’s home. The man has been arrested and sentenced to 18 months in prison! 💚

We’ve had another successful rescue thanks to increased public awareness about owning illegal wildlife 💚 An informant contacted ENV about an oriental small-clawed otter needing a voluntary transfer. After purchasing it as a pet, he was especially curious about what the rescue would entail and whether the otter would be rehomed to a nice environment. A good pet owner is one that knows what’s right for the animal, and when it comes to wildlife the best thing is to not be treated like a pet! 💡

The owner of this critically endangered stripe-necked turtle decided to call the ENV Wildlife Crime Hotline after realizing that the wild animal is not only protected by law, but would have a better life in a suitable wildlife facility 🌳
After receiving the call, our team worked with the Ho Chi Minh City Forest Protection Department who arranged the voluntary transfer of this tiny 0.05 kg turtle to Cu Chi Wildlife Rescue Station. This species is found in north and central Vietnam, in addition to parts of China and Taiwan, and is recognized as critically endangered by the IUCN‼️

On November 5th, ENV’s Wildlife Crime Unit received a hotline call 📞 from an informant about a leopard cat needing a voluntary transfer from Ho Chi Minh City.
She had initially bought the leopard cat from an illegal trader, but reached out to ENV after a change of heart 💚 While the transfer was being prepared, the leopard cat almost escaped out of the informant’s balcony! Luckily, the cat was kept secure until the Ho Chi Minh Forest Protection Department could receive it the following morning.
After an eventful weekend, this wild animal has been taken to a more suitable home in Cu Chi Wildlife Rescue Station. This is a prime example of an illegal wildlife owner realizing that wildlife belongs in the wild, not in the home! 🍃

The ENV Wildlife Crime Hotline received a report from the public on August 27th, informing them of a feng shui shop selling illegal wildlife items ❌ We got in touch with the Da Lat City Environment Police in Lam Dong province, who responded to the report by visiting the shop. The local authorities successfully confiscated 60 elephant ivory rings, 8 elephant ivory bracelets, 20 bear claw pendants, 20 wild pig canine pendants, and 30 elephant tails 🚨🚨
Senseless demand for wildlife products as jewelry and home décor can and must be stopped.
