Yesterday an officer from Vietnamese conservation group PanNature notified ENV of two gibbons being kept illegally at a private health establishment in Binh Phuoc province. The owner had previously received the gibbons as a gesture of goodwill and wasn’t aware he was breaking the law.
ENV contacted the Binh Phuoc Forest Protection Department (FPD), which visited the site. We are now working with the FPD to promote the transfer of the gibbons to a wildlife rescue center.
The FPD identified the primates as a northern white-cheeked gibbon (Nomascus leucogenys), which is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as critically endangered, and a yellow-cheeked gibbon (Nomascus gabriellae), listed by the IUCN as endangered. Both species are protected under Vietnam’s Decree 32 (2006/ND-CP).
