In May 2013, ENV Wildlife Crime Unit conducted an inspection visit on a bear farm hotspot in Quynh Luu, Nghe An. Many bear bile signboards were found illegally displayed. We immediately informed to Quynh Luu People’s Committee and cooperated with the local Forest Protection Department (FPD) to enforce the bear farms to remove their advertisment.
Further monitoring in July concludes that although many signboards have been removed as a result of timely intervention of FPD and authorities. Many advertisers found a conservationist nemesis a “loop hole”. In many cases as the photograph shows, business owners removed the word “bear” leaving just “bile” advertised on the signboard. This is a challenging dilemma that both ENV and authorities will face together.
