Green sea turtle released into the ocean

On October 18th, an informant called ENV’s hotline to report about a green sea turtle that was being kept in a temple in Bac Lieu province. ENV immediately liaised with the local Department of Capture Fisheries and Resource Protection and learned that the turtle was a gift that a group of Buddhists had given to the temple.

Although the monks in the temple agreed to transfer the animal, the Buddhist group still objected. In cooperation with Bac Lieu authorities, ENV explained to the group that keeping wildlife was illegal and successfully confiscated the animal. Yesterday, the green sea turtle was released into the ocean.

It is great to see that increasing numbers of informants are contacting our hotline to help protect wildlife and improve public awareness about wildlife conservation.
