Green sea turtle released back into the ocean

Vietnamese news on anninhthudo.vn reports that a fisherman in Quang Tri province, central Vietnam caught a ten kilogram green sea turtle on Monday and immediately reported it to the local authorities.

Thanks to his swift actions, the authorities were able to release the turtle back into the ocean the same day. Awareness raising activities in the local area have proved a great success: since 2006, fishermen in Quang Tri have released more than 20 sea turtles back into the wild. 



The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) is listed endangered on the IUCN Red List and protected under both the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Appendix I) and Vietnamese law (Circular 62/2008/TT-BNN).
