ENV’s hotline helps free macaque

On April 18, the ENV Wildlife Crime Hotline received a call from a volunteer reporting a macaque being kept in a store in Nghe An province (central Vietnam). ENV’s wildlife crime unit contacted the Quy Chau district FPD, who responded immediately, seizing a mature Stump-tailed macaque.

The owner said he bought the monkey as an infant, and raised it in his grocery shop. He received no punishment, and was instead informed of Vietnam’s wildlife laws. Due to a public holiday the FPD held the macaque for the weekend, and transferred it to the Pu Mat rescue center on April 22.
