Today we bring you some good gibbon news. On Friday, the Da Nang Forest Protection Department and the Environment Police confiscated a gibbon from a resident’s house in Cam Le district, Da Nang City. The gibbon was identified as a northern white-cheeked gibbon (Nomascus leucogenys) – the same species as one of the other gibbons discovered in Binh Phuoc last week.
The information that the gibbon was being kept illegally came from a local resident who initially informed the Small Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program in Cuc Phuong, which then passed the information on to us at ENV. The gibbon is now being transferred to Cuc Phuong National Park.
Successful confiscations like these demonstrate the importance of building community understanding and appreciation for these precious species and the laws and authorities that are there to protect them.
