This morning, an informant called us to report a langur being kept in a coffee shop in Quang Nam province. ENV promptly contacted and worked with local environmental police and the Forest Protection Department, which checked the premises and found the animal – a grey-shanked douc langur (Pygathrix cinerea).
They managed to persuade the keeper to give up the animal voluntarily, and this afternoon, the langur was released into the wild.
Grey-shanked douc langurs are listed under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and are also strictly protected under Group IB of Vietnamese Decree 32/2006/ND-CP.
Case reference No.5579/ENV
