By last count, there are 127 registered tigers in captivity in Vietnam, 31 at public zoos and rescue centers and 96 at nine privately owned establishments. Three of the private establishments have been directly linked to illegal trade of tigers while two more have been connected to other forms criminal activity in relation to wildlife. Three of the remaining four private owners have violated wildlife protection laws in the disposal of tigers and other wildlife that have died while in captivity.
Both authorities and ENV regularly monitor all nine tiger farms but irregularities identified during inspections suggest that some farmers are actively trading tigers by laundering them through their farms.
