On August 6 Thanhnien.com.vn reported that an ambulance with central Vietnamese license plates was chased by local police in southern Dong Nai province on the highway to Ho Chi Minh City. The ambulance was ultimately intercepted in Long Khanh and the drivers were unable to provide registration papers.
Inside the ambulance, police discovered five fake registration plates and a group of specialized bags usually used for wildlife trafficking. The drivers and ambulance were taken in for further investigation.
This is not the first time an ambulance is suspected to have been used for trafficking illegal wildlife species. However, the swift action taken by the local police offers an encouraging example of authorities’ commitment to investigating and combating wildlife crime in Vietnam.
