Police free macaque in less than 80 minutes!

On May 2, ENV’s Wildlife Crime Unit (WCU) received a message about a captive macaque via our English Facebook page. The message was from a European expatriate travelling in Lao Cai province, who found the monkey caged inside a restaurant in Bao Nhai commune.

The WCU investigated the case, confirming the address of the restaurant and the presence of the macaque. The WCU phoned the Bao Nhai FPD, who promised immediate action. Within 80 minutes of receiving the information, the FPD seized the monkey. ENV is thrilled by such a fast and effective police response! The police have promised to keep ENV informed of the monkey’s destination, and any charges given to its former owner.
