On Tuesday April 16th, an ENV staff member informed the Wildlife Crime Unit that a Rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) was being illegally held in a restaurant in Cao Bang province (northern Vietnam). The monkey was confined in the restaurant’s warehouse and constrained by a chain around its neck.
When the Wildlife Crime Unit contacted the Cao Bang Forest Protection Department, they confiscated the monkey in less than two hours. After a week of monitoring its condition, the macaque was released. We were very impressed by the very fast response from the authorities!
