Today, we are lucky to be witnessing a milestone in the conservation of Vietnamese pond turtles. Seventy-one turtles are joining more than 200 of their relatives at the Turtle Conservation Center (TCC) here in Cuc Phuong National Park in Ninh Binh province, Vietnam.
The ultimate long-term goal is to return these turtles to their best remaining habitat – Quang Ngai province in central Vietnam, as part of the Mauremys Annamensis Project (MAP) managed by the Asian Turtle Program.
The turtles, which were successfully bred in Europe and returned to Vietnam through a partnership with the Rotterdam and Münster Zoos and private breeder Mr. Herbert Becker, are now safe and sound at their new home in the TCC. We are pleased to have had the chance to be involved in this historic event, celebrating the success and importance of such conservation efforts in Vietnam!
