On June 15, ENV is officially launching the first “Wildlife Blitz,” a great event gathering expats and volunteers with lots of interesting activities. National and international volunteers will join hands to conduct business inspections, report violations, and ensure compliance with wildlife protection laws. This will be done by inspecting restaurants, bars, and other targeted businesses in Cau Giay District, Hanoi.
Teams will consist of two volunteers; one foreign volunteer and one Vietnamese volunteer. Each team will be assigned a specific section of the target area consisting of 20-40 business establishments that need to be checked. The teams will look for signboards advertising wildlife, examine menus, and check for wildlife wines, live animals, or wildlife products. The results of each inspection will then be documented.
When the survey period is complete, the monitoring results will be submitted. ENV’s Wildlife Crime Unit will then notify authorities of any high priority cases, issue warnings to businesses for minor violations, and work with district leaders to address consumer crimes within the district.
ENV will monitor these establishments after several months to evaluate the success of local authorities in dealing with the violations. The results will also appear in ENV’s National Report Card on wildlife crime, evaluating how well different districts within target address consumer wildlife crime.
