Grey-shanked douc langur transferred to EPRC

On December 12th, a Vietnamese citizen contacted the Endangered Primate Rescue Center (EPRC) to report about a grey-shanked douc langur that he obtained after seeing it for sale in Phu Yen province two days prior to reporting the case.

The informant was seeking help to find a good home for the langur. Yesterday, the grey-shanked douc langur was successfully transferred to the EPRC.

Whilst it is encouraging that ordinary people in Vietnam are deciding to voluntarily transfer wild animals to the authorities and rescue centers, ENV urges the public to directly call the local authorities or the ENV hotline (1800-1522) instead of purchasing the animals, as this act unintentionally supports the illegal wildlife trade. This story shows that whilst steps are being made in the right direction, there is still a lot of work to do for the effective conservation of wildlife in Vietnam.

Grey-shanked douc langurs are listed under Appendix I of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) and are also protected under Group IB of Vietnamese Decree 32/2006/ND-CP.

Case ref no: 5707
