Birds of prey fall prey to Vietnamese exotic pet dealers

Eagles are listed as endangered species and are protected by the law in Vietnam, but they have become a new type of exotic pet in Ho Chi Minh City.

The Vietnamese call them “king birds.” Breeding and training eagles is developing as an illegal industry, and owning an eagle is now a status symbol. The bigger this business becomes, the higher the risks this species has to face in the wild. 

 

Ho Chi Minh City authorities need to address this issue as soon as possible, or the “king birds” may have the same fate with the “king beast” – the tiger.
