From January 24 to 26 last week, there were three different illegal wildlife trade cases, with police and local FPD confiscating a total of almost 800kg of wildlife in Ha Tinh, Quang Tri and Da Nang provinces (Central Vietnam).
The animals confiscated included turtles, snakes, wild pigs, sambar deer, stump-tailed macaques, and rhesus macaques…some of them are still alive, but unfortunately most are already dead and were being kept in the freezer or in wine. Two suspects have been arrested in relation to the Da Nang case, and the driver has been arrested in the Quang Tri case.
Police say all three cases are connected to the demand for wildlife in the upcoming lunar New Year celebrations (Tet holiday). Great work by the authorities in stopping these cases, but with wildlife in two out of the three cases being transported from Laos into Vietnam; it shows there is still need for stronger law enforcement and cooperation from neighboring countries.
